    What is Making Tax Digital?

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is a big change coming to the UK’s tax system, and it’s important for self-employed businesses, sole traders, and landlords to be prepared. Essentially, MTD is an overhaul of the way taxes are filed and reported to HMRC. The goal is to move everything to a digital format, making the process more efficient and reducing errors.

From 2026, if you're self-employed, a sole trader, or a landlord earning over £50,000, you’ll need to start filing under the new MTD rules. Those earning over £30,000 will follow from April 2027. For many businesses, this means filing with HMRC up to five times a year, instead of just once.

Another key part of MTD is that all records must be kept digitally. This means no more paper receipts or manual spreadsheets – everything needs to be stored in digital formats. Additionally, you’ll no longer be able to file your tax return directly via the HMRC website; instead, you'll need to use special software designed for MTD.

I know this sounds like a lot more work, and it definitely will be, but don’t worry! I’m here to help. At The Accountancy Workshop, I can guide you through the transition and make sure you stay compliant with all the new requirements. Let me handle the digital record keeping, filings, and software, so you can focus on growing your business.

Can I Still Submit My Own Tax Return to HMRC?

With the upcoming changes brought by Making Tax Digital (MTD), submitting your Self Assessment tax return directly to the HMRC website is no longer an option. Under the new rules, you'll need to use HMRC-approved software or work with an accountant (like me!) who can handle the submission on your behalf.

But that’s not all – manual record keeping is also being phased out. Every transaction in your business or self-employment must be recorded digitally and submitted in a specific format approved by HMRC.

I know it sounds like a lot to get used to, but don’t worry! I’m here to guide you through the process, At The Accountancy Workshop, I use software that is fully compliant with the Making Tax Digital (MTD) regulations. If the thought of setting up a new digital system feels a bit overwhelming, don’t worry – I’m here to make sure your accounts are completely MTD-compliant without all the stress.

Whether you prefer handling everything digitally or still like to work with paper (no judgment here!), I’ve got a system that works for you. Even if you’re still sending me a bag full of receipts, I can digitise, manage, and submit your MTD reports to HMRC – all without you having to lift a finger.

So, if you want to ensure your tax and accounting processes are hassle-free and fully compliant with the new rules, get in touch with me today. I’ve got you covered!
